The holiday season is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your guitar, and when it's cold outside what's better than a great-sounding fingerstyle warm-up lesson that's also designed to challenge you?

Elixir® Strings artist Scott Goldbaum is the ideal teacher for this focus on major and minor 7th arpeggios. Scott's 18 years of playing experience has seen him as a music director for both Keith Urban and Randy Jackson as a session musician, and his teaching work has seen him helping aspiring guitarists with Fender Play.

The lesson above is aimed at intermediate to advanced players, and it’s not only a useful workout for your hands, but it’s also a lot of fun to play too. Take your time with it and you'll discover it's an effective way to develop the coordination between your picking thumb and fretting hand – so remember to work to gradually increase speed as you integrate your other picking fingers to play the higher strings.

Scott advises us to develop and build up this playing speed while learning the piece by gently “grazing” the strings to create a melodically flowing piece of music.

The smooth and long-lasting playability of Elixir® Strings will help with all this – as showcased in the sweet sounds of Scott's fingerstyle take on a Christmas classic above.

Scott uses Elixir® Strings Acoustic Phosphor Bronze with NANOWEB® Coating, in 11-52 Custom Light gauge: "I love the tone, the feel and the response of Elixir® Strings," Scott says.
